The month of September can mean high burnout for professionals in the horse industry. The transition from summer to fall can bring chaos: schedules shift, show seasons wind down, and winter prep begins, leaving many horse business owners feeling overwhelmed. In this post, you’ll learn a simple yet powerful mindset exercise to reduce stress and embrace gratitude, helping you stay grounded through seasonal demands. Feeling yourself starting to fade with the season? Try this mini mindset exercise whenever you need a little boost.

The Coffee Cup Exercise: A One-Minute Mindset Reset

You are holding a cup of coffee when someone bumps into you, making you spill your coffee everywhere. Why did you spill the coffee? Because there was coffee in your cup. Had there been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea.

Whatever is inside the cup is what will spill out. So, when life comes along and shakes you, whatever is inside you will splash out.

Ask yourself, “What’s in my cup?” When life gets tough, what spills out? Do joy, gratitude, peace, and humility spill out? Or do anger, bitterness, harsh words, and negative reactions splash everywhere? You choose!

For success today, fill your cup with gratitude, forgiveness, joy, gentleness, and love for others, ahead of time. Then, if life “bumps into you,” something good will come out of it.

Small Moments of Gratitude in Daily Barn Life

A few things I am grateful and full of love for today:

  • My gentle teachers; my sweet lesson horses

  • The opportunity to move throughout the day as a result of a career in horses

  • A supportive community, both online through Equestripreneur and locally with students, fellow trainers and instructors, and families I teach and get to interact with

  • Our beautiful farm; while our setup is not the most ideal it gets the job done and enables me to bring my passion for horses and teaching into the world every single day

  • All of you, whose love for the industry and passion for finding success will enable the equestrian sport to endure for generations to come.

Reflection Prompts for Busy Equestrians

What are you grateful or full of love for?

What do you wish to forgive and let go of?

Where can you show up with a bit more patience and gentleness today?

Take a few minutes to think on the above and build this mini mindset reset exercise into your day whenever you feel anger, bitterness, harsh words, and negative reactions beginning to spill out. It takes all of 1 minute. What are some things in your horse business you’re grateful for?

Happy Riding!
